New zx14 owner
07/08/21 8:05 PM

Hi everyone, newbie here. Bought a 2006 zx14 last week and this forum has already been immensely helpful. I already fixed my valve cover leak ( the washer on bolts worked so far) and saved myself from possible engine catastrophe when I lost both my well nuts in the airbox. I know this forum will be very helpful and I plan on keeping my zx14 forever so why not join.
1 question I have. On the Gen 1 zx14 is worth it going full exhaust or just slip ons, since there is no cat in the factory headers?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome soloninja.

I never tried slipons only. I can just say the weight difference is extremely noticeable going with a full system. I'd recommend the full system rout unless you can find slipons that are a lot less expensive that a full system. It seemed the price of slipons was not so much less than a full system when I looked years ago. A single exhaust makes chain maintenance so much easier but a lot of people say the bike has enough power already without a full system and that is true too.

Rook
Thanks for the reply. I see alot of your how tos on the forum and have already used some of them as a guide, so thank you for the effort. Yes I see that alot of slip ons are very close to the price of a full system. In fact i see the voodoo full exhaust system is cheaper then some big name slip ons

Glad the tutorials helped.

They're expensive but if it's a full system, I'd go with Akrapovich or Brocks for the performance enhancement. Brocks will be loud. I like M4 Retrodrags for Slipons. They're pretty loud too, they look cool and are really light.

Thanks for the suggestions. Do you know if anyone makes a single slip on exhaust for the gen1?

If one were use a single slipon, that would have to be a full system. The reason being, the stock header/collector pipe is all one piece and the collector has two exits, one for each stock muffler. So, you'd need a header/collector that has only one exit for the single slipon muffler = the manufacturer would have to design a header collector to match the muffler = a full system. BUT I have seen one member show pictures of his stock header/collector on which he somehow blocked off the exit to the LH muffler and used a RH slipon to achieve exactly what you are asking about. He said it ran well. I don't know how that setup effected peak performance but it couldn't have been too bad if as he said, it ran well.

I knew a guy who had $50 exhaust tips for a car exhaust welded to his stock exhaust. It sounded awesome and the guy said it ran as well as stock. It was quite loud, about like a Brocks exhaust.

I see what you mean now. I was thinking of trying some exhaust tips like you mentioned but was aftaid it'd bee too loud and not have enough back pressure. I think I'll be going with the voodoo full exhaust.
Do you know if I'll have issues clearing the oem center stand?
Thank you for the replies

Welcome to the Forum. I'm pretty new here too.
I think that you replied to my thread instead of making a new thread to introduce yourself

Welcome to all new members Rook has a ton of informational threads, use them.
I have a full Yosh system and had to get a bracket to stop my center stand from going too
high and hitting the chain.

Maddevil what year is your zx14 and what yoshimura system do you have?
I installed a full Yoshimura TRC on my 2006 over the weekend and the mid pipe didn't clear the center stand. I don't know if I installed it wrong but there's no exhaust leaks. Also I had to use some washers to clear the fairings (barely clearing) so it was too far in (left) and hitting the stand but also too far out (right) and hitting the lower fairing. So I left it how it was and just removed the center stand.

The pipe on my 08 almost touched the lower edge of the RH lower. The edge melted just a bit. No big deal on a black fairing. It just melted away a tiny bit and no more problem. I had the same fairing on there with the same pipe for 10 years.

I am 6 foot 4 inch too , but 125kg bare ass . I got old injuries from 2 major bike accidents , '86 Dec and April '90 , shattered every limb somewhere . I cannot fit on any 1000 or Ducati , so my bikes are big cc variants of as close as I can get . I love to ride them in the tight swervery and other more open swervery surrounding my city in OZ , except for the pigs ....

Toad glad you can still ride. I was afraid coming from a zx6r last year to the zx14 that I wouldn't be able to maneuver it like a sportbike but after switching from lsl bar risers to stock clip ons and loosing nearly 40lbs from the full exhaust I feel like i can still maneuver it like a liter bike.

Thanks bro , I am glad to ride , but I was young and truly crazy back then , sort of older and wiser ...finally lol .
Well the 600 class is probably the best streetbike class you can get , for actual street / hills canyon riding imho . But if we are physically compromised on any bike , well that can be negative to concentration and everything that follows in riding , as we know .
All us owners of the Zed14 , know it is very capable , standard , the weight is carried low , the mufflers are as heavy as they look lol , but riding it it is very flickable . Junking all that exhaust is great , as you know , really another level of ability from already very good big cc behaved bike . Are you planning future handling mods for road performance or are you heading for a drag orientated streeter . I went for the handling updates , but still would like to also own a lowered , stretched , clutched , low 8 second streeter for drags , if the pricks can organize a track where I live ...
I just did the equivalent to my Busa , I mean same thing bar wise , except I used special clipons from Gilles on the Busa . Like superbike bar position , then I changed the rearsets to as low as I could and forward as far as too . The Busa is now that comfortable , it is now probably the most ideal bike for me , because , yeah , I can turn it easy and hard at will in comfort , same as your ZX14 mod , awesome . The Busa is my urban assault vehicle .

We're all a little crazy in the end lol. I actually took the lsl risers off. I bought it like that and like the clip ons better for sporty handling. I really like speed thats what draws me to these bikes but its not just acceleration and power but quick handling too. I would like a drag oriented zx14 but want to be able to handle the twisties too. Maybe buy a zx14r and make that one drag dedicated one day

Sorry bro , sidetracked getting lunch for me charges . Hahahah , I gotit the wrong way round then , but I have left my Zed14 standard bars to , it actually came with risers , the stock bars on blocks at least 30mm higher by memory ....The 14 is more comfortable than the Busa stock setup , but now I have modded my Busa , the Busa edges it out because of peg height . Both got rearsets , the 14 runs Gilles , that give you standard oem height and length , but the 14 is v good , I am just wounded .
My old mate , who lives interstate is coming down later this year , he drags a high km Gen 2 Busa , stretched etc. , but dead stock mtr. 8.67 1/4 mile . He is looking forward to riding my 14 , he has never ridden one or a stock bike that has more than 200bhp at the wheel . If the drags allow it , because they may open Adelaide International Raceway just for a national meet , he might be able to run it stock length lowered street class ? Before he stretched that Busa , he got 9.1 1/4 , so he might be able to better that by a bit on the 14 . His Busa was not really ever making killer stock power , my Busa makes more when streeters .

Lol no problem I re-read my post and realized I didn't make much sense. I actually liked the bar risers setup but took em off because I was afraid it would change the handling or the aerodynamics of the bike going over 150 mph. I brought it to about 150mph when I test road it but figured it might be dangerous going over 180 mph with the lsl setup.
Do the adjustable rear sets change the handling at all?
Is everything shut down over in Australia?

Australia is only in lockdown in New South Wales as I write , the city Sydney mostly , but also NSW state . We , SA Adelaide city got out of one week last Tuesday finished , that was the first lockdown for many months for me . The government over here (Feds) are stuffing the good job of control we started off with . Also , we have a lot of dual citizens , they are coming back to Australia from Delta strain ravaged countries , India and UK , Indonesia etc. and the quarantine we got to clear them is really shit . So these Aussie duals are bringing Delta with them and we are basically helping the spread by shit handling of them .
The rearsets can change your feet position , thus moving around your weight transfer , most go higher and back further . The higher and further back , with clipons can aid tip in agility . But if you dont fit it , the opposite !! I got Gilles , because they are very well made , the gear select mirrors the standard setup , so my cordona quick shifter is the same when I fit it . I also got the Gilles because it offers standard peg position , which is best , and is overall a lighter than stock setup , and wank visual value.... hahahah
I think LSL bars will be okay to fast speed , but to go fast of course, you need to be tucked in and prone on the tank , something the LSL bars dont favor compared to stock clipons . The LSL bars will provide excellent maneuverability at low to even pretty fast speed , but not the maximum speed imho . Honestly , I did not like LSL bars setup on most sport bikes , but I have seen some that do look pretty neat , now that I have been looking because of Busa . But the clipon setup I run , it is definitely pretty unique look to it , the Busa looks like a streetfighter Busa that aint naked , lol

Right side exit only with a slip on and factory header - left side factory header where midpipe slides on the header you pull the midpipe and cut the pipe right behind the clamp then have a plate welded over it then slide it back on the header and tighten the clamp. Left side is now clamped off and now right side exit only.
Before some get into the harmonics of exhaust flow for the clamp job my 2008 with this and TRE and 2 degree advancer and PC5 did 180 RWHP on the dyno. Took 7 different tries with the PC5 to do it but worked great after that.

soloninja where are you located ?
